The Photos above document the outcome of a project I worked on while studying at KISD. The aim was to create a magazine or fanzine out of just one word. Students had to interpret the word and create a content around it and then visually translate it in form of a printed book. The first presented Fanzine is based upon the topic “dein Veedel”, German for "your hood”. I based the content around “the Unicenter”, a building complex near my home which at first doesn’t seem to have an aesthetically pleasing impact on the people around it. Through interviews and photography tried to capture the atmosphere and visually communicate what is going on inside this diverse place.
The book shown here was created under the topic “new release” the task was to take an existing text, interpret it and to visually communicate it. I chose the novel “Sombrero Fallout” written by Richard Brautigam. The content of the book as well as the style it is written in at first seem rather bizarre and random, which is reinforced by the many and irritating chapter titles such as: Tuna sandwich, black hair, eraser. In order to emphasise them I used mixed media to make them seem like they are spontaneously rushing from page to page. Furthermore I created a table of contents for the book: instead of listing the chapter names chronologically I integrated them into an artwork, created with mixed media. The cover of the book is only readable from back to front. This underlines the fact that the book at first seems trivial but becomes more an more meaningful as it develops.
